GC to Hold Annual Veterans Day Event

Gate City officials plan to honor local veterans who served their country with their annual Veterans Day Celebration.

Planned for Monday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m. at Grogan Park, the public is invited to join the event to help pay tribute to local veterans for their service to our country and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Groups participating in the event include Gate City Mayor Frances Perry, American Legion Post No. 265 of Gate City, American Legion Hammond Post No. 3 of Kingsport, Tenn., Gate City High School band, Carter’s Fort Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Overmountain Men Chapter Sons of the American Revolution, Virginia Frontier Society Children of the American Revolution and Elijah Cross II US Daughters of 1812.

James Worsham, a member of the Bluefield, W.Va. American Legion Riley-Vest Post No. 9, is the guest speaker.

A retired history teacher at Bluefield State College, he also served as a national park ranger at four national parks for eight summers.

Worsham served as a sergeant in the US Army Reserve with a military intelligence detachment and an infantry battalion.

World War II soldier Terry Smith enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and will also provide comments. He served in the Pacific aboard LST 606 (vessel that lands troops & tanks on the beach during invasion) as a signal man. He attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer 3rd Class.

Smith participated in the invasions of Palau, Leyte and Okinawa.

After the service, Elvis impersonator Jim Fields will present a special tribute to veterans.

The public is welcome and asked to bring a lawn chair.
