2006 Guide
 to Municipal Elections

The 2006 guide to municipal elections is designed to inform you, the voter, of the candidates running for office in the May 2, 2006 General Election.  Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.  We encourage you to let your voice be heard by voting for the candidates of your choice.

A total of 42 candidates are on the May 2 ballot with a large number of candidates running in the four largest towns. In the smaller towns, write-in candidates will be selected to fill vacant seats.

George Isaacs

Office Sought: Nickelsville Mayor

Personal information: Isaacs seeks his second term as mayor of Nickelsville. He graduated from Nickelsville High School in 1950 and retired from municipal government where he worked for 42 years. He and his wife, Mary Ellen, have five adult children. He is 75 years old.

Shirley Carey Cassell

Office Sought: Nickelsville Town Council

Personal Information: Cassell is seeking her second term on the council. She is married to Jimmy Cassell and is 59 years old. She is a 1965 graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and is a housewife. She has been active on the Nickelsville Rescue Squad for the past 10 years and states she enjoys working with other volunteers. Cassell says the Nickelsville Town Council has come a long way in the past four years and she hopes to continue the work.

Robert DeVries

Office Sought: Nickelsville Town Council

Personal Information: A newcomer to politics, DeVries is seeking his first term on the council. The 63-year-old Nickelsville resident graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School in Kalamazoo, Mich. in 1960.  He took college courses at Western Michigan University. He is currently retired.

Danny Dixon

Office Sought: Nickelsville Town Council

Personal Information: Dixon is completing a two-year appointment on the council but previously served eight years on the board. Although he retired last year from the Scott County School System after 34 years as a teacher and administrator, he is currently serving as director of the A. Linwood Holton Governor's School in Abingdon. Dixon graduated from Nickelsville High School in 1968, earned his bachelor's degree in 1972 from Milligan College and his master's degree in education from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1975. He is 56 years old and is married to Maxie Dixon. The couple has one adult daughter. Dixon also served four years on the Nickelsville Planning Commission.

Tommy Green

Office Sought: Nickelsville Town Council

Personal Information: Green was tapped to fill an unexpired term on the council 18 months ago. He and his wife, Cindy, will celebrate their 42nd wedding anniversary in June. They have four children and three grandchildren. Green is a 1961 graduate of El Dorado High School, and earned his bachelor's degree in 1968 from North Texas State University. He completed his master's degree in 1975 from Virginia Tech. Currently retired from the Scott County School System, Green was employed for 30 years as a teacher and elementary school principal. Since his retirement six years ago, he continues to assist the school system by driving a school bus when needed. He serves as treasurer of the Nickelsville Senior Citizens and is 62 years old.

Jonathan Mark Mills

Office Sought: Nickelsville Town Council

Personal Information: Mills is the Nickelsville Post Master, a position he has held for the past three years. He is seeking his first term on the council. The 44-year-old graduated from Mainland Senior High School, Daytona Beach, Fla. in 1980. He earned an associate of science degree in engineering in 1982 from Georgia Military College. He is also a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in Special Forces and as a helicopter pilot. Mills is a member of Fidelity 173 Masonic Lodge of Nickelsville and the Nickelsville Ruritan Club. He is also a lifetime member of the North American Hunting Club, treasurer of the Greene County Regulators Ð single action shooting society and the National Rifle Association. He formerly served as supervisor of customer services for Kingsport, Tenn. and Bristol, Tenn./Va. main post offices. He and his wife, Liza, have lived in Nickelsville for the past 10 years. His wife is the daughter of Howard and Kathleen Shoemaker and she served on the Nickelsville Planning Commission.

Roger Mustard

Office Sought: Nickelsville Town Council

Personal Information: Mustard and his wife, Dorothy, have two adult sons, twin grandsons and one granddaughter. He graduated from Ervinton High School in 1960 and is retired as agency manager of Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Company's Scott County office. He served a total of 25 years in the insurance business, 20 years in Scott County and five years working in Bristol. He has taken numerous courses during his insurance career, which amount to at least two years of college. The 64-year-old has been very active in the local community and has served on the Mountain Empire Community College board and the advisory board at BB&T Bank. He is a member of Holston View United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge No. 66 of Clintwood and the Order of Eastern Star of Nickelsville. Mustard states he is a very active member of his church and community and enjoys fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Steve Corder is also seeking a position on the Nickelsville Town Council. There are six seats on the council.
