A contract has been awarded on the initial phase of the Moccasin Gap Interchange.
Last week Virginia Department of Transportation officials announced that four highway contracts had been recently awarded in the Bristol District of VDOT.
The Bristol District consists of 12 counties in Southwestern Virginia: Washington, Smyth, Lee, Scott, Russell, Buchanan, Tazewell, Bland, Wise, Dickenson, Grayson and Wythe.
A contract valued at approximately $6.6 million was awarded this week to Elk Knob, Inc., Pennington Gap, to construct Phase One of the Moccasin Gap Bypass in Scott County, which will connect Routes 58, 23 and 224 - Wadlow Gap Road. Construction is anticipated to begin in June.
Three other projects were also recently awarded:
Bizzack, Inc., Lexington, Ky., received a $3.9 million contract to extend Route 696 in the Boissevain area of Tazewell County. The new section will tie Route 696 to Route 702, which construction is currently underway.
A $913,382 contract was awarded to Sowers Construction Co., Inc., Mt. Airy, N.C., to reconstruct approximately 2.5-miles of Route 787 - Davis Knob Road in Grayson County, from Route 615 to Route 607.
The $389,843 contract to repair a retaining wall on Brown Street in the Town of Appalachia was awarded to Soil Nail Launcher, Inc., Grand Junction, Colo. The retaining wall is located along Route 1310 - locally known as Brown Street - adjacent to the Powell River in Wise County.
