Two Democratic hopefuls have spent millions of dollars and traded numerous barbs as they vie for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate.
The two candidates hope to have the opportunity to upset incumbent Republican Senator George Allen by winning next Tuesday's Democratic Primary.
Voters will pick the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in a June 13 primary. Election prognosticators say that the primary is unlikely to draw many voters, and the outcome is unpredictable.
But whoever wins the primary, that winner will oppose Sen. George Allen in the Nov. 7 general election.
Candidates on the ballot include Jim Webb of Arlington and Harris Miller of McLean.
Webb, author, screenwriter, a former Assistant Secretary of Defense and a former Secretary of the Navy, began his campaign in February and scheduled a campaign stop in Scott County.
He has deep family roots in Gate City with some family members still living in Alley Valley. His early ancestors descended principally from the Scots-Irish settlers who came to this country from Northern Ireland in the 18th century and became pioneers in the mountains of Southwest Virginia.
His opponent is Harris Miller, a Northern Virginia telecommunications lobbyist for more than a decade, announced his candidacy in January.
Miller quit his job as president of the Arlington-based Information Technology Association of America to seek the Democratic nomination for senate.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Virginia does not register voters by party, so the primary is open to any registered voter. Virginia requires voters to show identification at the polls or sign an affirmation of identity.
