Nickelsville Days Promises "Something to Be Proud Of"

From staff reports

Nickelsville residents are boasting that this weekend’s festival is indeed “Something to be proud of.”

The annual Nickelsville Days Festival is set to begin this Friday, June 23, Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25 with a host of activities for young and old.

Organizers say this year’s theme, “Something to be proud of,” explains the community pride in the town and vow the festival will be the best one yet.

Some of the activities include vendors, a community parade, fireworks, live music with open mic and jam sessions, antique cars, kids’ events and a street dance.

Nickelsville Pizza Plus Manager Joyce Powers
and her son, John, show off the 2006 edition
of the Nickelsville Days t-shirts. Shirts are
available at BB&T, Corder's Market, and Pizz
Plus. A full range of Nickelsville Days activities
are included in the print edition.

Nickelsville Days T-shirts and hats bearing the festival’s logo are available at BB&T Bank of Nickelsville, Pizza Plus and at Corder’s Market. T-shirts in Carolina blue are $10 for youth sizes to adult extra large. The cost is $3 additional dollars for XXL and XXXL shirts. Hats are also available in white or blue for $6.

During the heart of Saturday’s activities around 7 p.m., a total of 41 prizes will be given away. Prizes include a four night stay in a secluded cabin on beautiful Roan Mountain, free dinners at local restaurants and gift certificates from local merchants. To be eligible to win, you must purchase a $1 ticket for the drawings from members of the Nickelsville Planning commission.

All events will be held in downtown Nickelsville.

Vendor booths officially open the festival at 4 p.m. on Friday. You can start your festival just right by enjoying a spaghetti dinner at the Masonic Lodge Hall, courtesy of the renowned cooks from the Nickelsville Eastern Star. Spaghetti and the trimmings will be served from 4 to 6 p.m. in the lodge hall at a cost of $6 for adults, $4 for children.

A new venue this year is the crowning of Miss Nickelsville Days during the beauty pageant, slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Nickelsville Fire Department.

All proceeds generated through the two meals will be used by the Eastern Star for the Children’s Christmas Party.
