Fun Fest Heads Into
Scott CountyAs neighbors to the south of Scott County prepare for this weekend’s Fun Fest kick-off, one of the largest events during the festival is held right here in Scott County. Other fun activities are also planned this weekend in Mendota and Dungannon.
Tour de Possum Creek
An official Fun Fest Event, last year’s bicycle ride was enjoyed by thousands of cycle enthusiasts.
The ninth annual Tour de Possum Creek and Family Fun Bicycle Ride is set for Saturday, July 15 in the beautiful countryside of Scott County. A total of 1,200 riders participated in the 2005 edition.
Participants are allowed to pedal their bicycles on three different routes along the beautiful back roads of Yuma by the banks of Possum Creek. Riders can choose 7-, 22- or 38.5-mile routes and go as fast or slow as they wish.
The 38.5 mile course is billed as the X-Treme Possum Challenge, a race against the clock with a new uphill finish. Riders in this event will attempt to not only be the first over the finish, but also complete the rigorous route in less than 2 hours
The 22-mile tour and X-Treme Possum Challenge meet at the Yuma Elementary School July 15. Registration begins at 7 a.m., the X-Treme Possum Challenge at 8:30 a.m. and the short 22.5-mile tour at 9 a.m.
The Family Fun Ride starts at 10 a.m. at the new location on Warm Springs Rd just 1 mile down Yuma Rd on the left.
Registration is $10 for single entrants and $30 for families of four or more. Forms will be available at the Fun Fest Store and at participating sponsor locations. These should be mailed to the Fun Fest Store or returned in person before closing time on Wednesday, July 12. Late registration will be required after that time on the morning of the ride for a higher fee of $20.

Battle On The Holston
A Civil War re-enactment will be taking place on Saturday, July 15, and Sunday, July 15. The re-enactments will begin each day at 10 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.
Confederate and Union troops will set up camp along the Holston River at the Malone Horse Farm in Weber City. The battle will take place at 2 p.m. each day.
The Dawg House of Weber City sponsors this event. Tickets are $4 and are available at the Fun Fest Store.
Mendota Heritage Festival
The 17th annual Mendota Heritage Festival will be taking place on Saturday, July 15. The festival will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a good old country breakfast with all the trimmings. Breakfast will include bacon, sausage, eggs, coffee, biscuits and gravy.
The downtown parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. Participants should line up for the parade at 10 a.m.
There will be plenty of craft and food vendors. Each vendor will have a $15 gift to give away. Register to win drawings at 3 p.m.
There will be more than 20 cakes auctioned off during the day. All cakes are donated by individuals or local popular restaurants.
Lunch will be served at the festival, beginning at 11 a.m. Outdoor-grilled hamburgers and hotdogs will be available along with blooming onions, snow cones, kettle corn, and other foods.
Children will be able to enjoy various games like basketball, fields of foam, and playground games. A petting zoo provided by Animal Adventures will also be available for the children.
Entertainment will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 2 p.m. There will be live Christian music – traditional and contemporary.

Firecracker Fun Show
If you are more interested in horses, then the Scott County Regional Horse Association’s Firecracker Fun Show is an event you won’t want to miss.
Slated for Saturday, July 15 at 5 p.m. at the Scott County Horse Park in Dungannon, participants can compete in 40 different classes for ribbons and cash prizes.
Proceeds from the show raise operating funds for the horse association.
The event includes children’s event like the best dressed dog, kids’ foot race and the stickhorse competition.

Homeplace Highlands Golf Tournament
If you like to play golf then this is the tournament for you.
Four person teams will play a select shot format to compete for awards and prizes in this brand new event slated for Friday, July 21 at 9 a.m. at Scott County Park & Golf Course.
The tournament sounds like many other local golf scrambles but there is a catch. Organizers ask that all players wear their kilt in choice of their own tartan to highlight the Scots-Irish heritage of the region.
This event is sponsored by Clinch Mountain Cultural Center, Sid Rhoton Law Office, Farm Credit of the Virginias and Friends of the Homeplace.

Homeplace Highland Games
The sixth annual games of our Scottish ancestors is planned for Saturday, July 22 at 9 a.m. at the Homeplace Mountain Farm & Museum in Wadlow Gap.
Sponsored by Clinch Mountain Cultural Center, Friends of the Homeplace, Sid Rhoton Law Office, New Peoples Bank and Gate City Fire Department, this year’s event is expected to have its biggest field of competitors to date.
Already 23 athletes have signed up to attend including No. 2 ranked US Amateur Chris Chafin from Currie, N.C. This year’s event features two division classifications with prizes awarded to the top finishers.
In addition to the athletic competition of centuries old training games, genealogy workshop, clan tents and children’s games are on tap. Sponsors for the genealogy tent include Overmountain Men Chapter SAR, Virginia Frontier Society C.A.R., Wilderness Trail Chapter Colonial Dames XVII Century and Elijah Cross II Chapter U.S.D. 1812.
Youthful members of the Virginia Frontier Society C.A.R. are sponsoring the Wee Ones Activity Center where young visitors can stop awhile to color or play.
