A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of persons involved in knocking over headstones in Holston View Cemetery in Weber City.

More than 19 tombstones were knocked over Thursday evening by vandals. The destruction was discovered Friday morning by employees of the cemetery.

According to Weber City Police Department Lt. Larry Wagner, it is unlawful for persons to trespass into the cemetery when the gates are closed. He added that the cemetery gates are closed at dark each evening.

The stones weigh in excess of 700 pounds and might require a crane to be put back into place. Families affected by the vandalism must bear the brunt of replacing and repairing the broken headstones.

This scale of vandalism hasn’t occurred at the cemetery for about 15 years. Two weeks ago, a large stone bearing the name “Haynes” was knocked off its foundation, a harbinger of additional destruction.

Wagner is investigating the case with some assistance from the Scott County Sheriff’s Office. For more information or to leave information, call the Weber City Police Department at 386-7201 or the Scott County Sheriff’s Office at 386-1351.
