2006 Shoe, Clothes, and Educational Fund
|
Now in its 18th year of providing warm shoes and socks at Christmas time, the Rotary Club of Scott County has worked to ensure needy and deserving children receive a special gift as part of its annual Shoe Fund campaign.
The club began purchasing shoes for school children back in 1989 when they asked local members to donate some money to provide for those in need. That first year, they bought 29 pairs of shoes which were distributed to county school children and the idea grew bigger the next year.
Since that time, literally tens of thousands of shoes and socks have been purchased due to the generosity of local residents, who understand the needs of the local community.
As the Rotary Club of Scott County begins its 18th annual campaign to provide warm shoes and socks during the holiday season, they ask local residents to send in their donations for the Shoe, Clothes and Educational Fund. The 2006 goal is $15,000 for 2006.
New shoes increase self-esteem and help to save parents money, explained Greg Adams, chairman of the 2006 campaign. New shoes are part of the basics that many children need to go to school and feel their best. Were not just providing shoes and socks but are giving these children a special gift that lets them know the community cares about them.
Donations have been received during the holiday week but an official accounting was not available.
We urge local citizens to help make Christmas brighter for those in need, added Adams. As always we truly appreciate the tremendous support we receive annually from our local residents. Be assured your contributions make this campaign successful.
The success of the fund is determined entirely by the contributions received from the local community. Beginning next week shoes and socks will be delivered to the more than 500 students involved.
Scott County school employees select children who are eligible to receive gifts from the Rotary Club.
All of the shoes and socks are bought from Payless Shoe Stores, who gives the organization a reduced price and allows their donations to go farther. The discount shoe store also carries a wide selection of fashionable shoes so recipients are footed in style.
Some of the money raised by the club may also be used for school related expenses for some of the recipients.
Contributions can be sent to Children's Shoe Fund, c/o Scott County Rotary Club, P.O. Box 728, Gate City, Va. 24251. The names of all contributors will be published along with a total of all donations in the Scott County Virginia Star.
