Fund Nears Goal's Midpoint

From staff reports

“Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.”
-Anthony Robbins

A large number of donations have been received this week to boost the Rotary Club of Scott County’s annual Shoe Fund campaign.

More than $4,000 was received this past week to push the current balance to $7,290. This year’s goal is $15,000 and members of the club will be distributing shoes this week to deserving recipients.

The Rotary Club of Scott County began the Shoe Fund back in 1989 when donations from members was used to purchase 29 pairs of shoes which were distributed to county school children.

Over the past 17 years, tens of thousands of shoes and socks have been given as an early Christmas gift to county school children.

As the Rotary Club of Scott County begins its 18th annual campaign to provide warm shoes and socks during the holiday season, they ask local residents to send in their donations for the Shoe, Clothes and Educational Fund.

“The Shoe Funds helps provide new shoes, warm socks to needy children that otherwise couldn’t afford to buy them,” explained Greg Adams, chairman of the 2006 campaign. “We thank all of our donors because without them the shoe fund campaign wouldn’t be possible. All contributions are appreciated.”

Contributions have been received from the following groups, businesses and individuals:

Fellowship Class of the Gate City, Gate City United Methodist Church, John and Kristina Kilgore, Elzoria V. Hickam, Barbara C. Quillin, Mike and Deborah Thomas, Paul and Phyllis Combs, James and Shirley Stapleton, Andrew Walters, Neil and Peggy Armstrong, Universal Machine and Tool Inc., Gillespie, Inc., Town of Weber City, Jane Miller and Curtis Spriggs, Holston View United Methodist Women, Ron and Colleen Darnell, Anson and Brenda Minton and four anonymous donors.

Approximately 500 students are slated to receive a new pair of shoes and some new socks later this week. Recipients are identified by Scott County school employees.

All of the shoes and socks are bought from Payless Shoe Stores, who offers fashionable and stylish shoes at a reduced price which allows donations to be stretched further.

Some of the money raised by the club may also be used for school related expenses for some of the recipients.

Contributions can be sent to Children's Shoe Fund, c/o Scott County Rotary Club, P.O. Box 728, Gate City, Va. 24251. The names of all contributors will be published along with a total of all donations in the Scott County Virginia Star.
