Last week Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced that 134 grants totaling more than $7.569 million had been awarded to support state and local law enforcement programs, and to assist programs that serve victims of domestic violence and other crimes.
Scott County received a portion of the grant funding to fund a prosecutor in the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office.
The grants will support programs serving victims of sexual and domestic violence; assist law enforcement in recruiting and training; upgrade criminal history records systems and other criminal justice-related information systems; improve efforts in homeland security; and support improvements in the juvenile justice system.
“These grants will allow localities, state agencies and other organizations to continue to assist victims of crime, strengthen law enforcement and homeland security efforts, and improve the overall capabilities of our criminal and juvenile justice agencies,” said Governor Kaine.
Scott County was awarded $40,000 from the Virginia Domestic Violence Victim Fund which will be used for the prosecution of domestic violence crimes. Lisa McConnell currently serves as the Domestic Violence Prosecutor for the county.
The money for the grants comes from federal funds allocated to Virginia, state funds appropriated by the General Assembly and state ‘special funds’ generated by fines assessed in criminal and traffic cases. The Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) administers the grant programs. The Criminal Justice Services Board reviewed and approved the grants at its December meeting.
