After a lengthy closed session that lasted well over an hour, Gate City Town Council members took only minutes to terminate one employee, accept the resignation of another, and eliminate two positions. After progressing fairly rapidly through most of their agenda items, council members entered closed session to discuss personnel issues and possible litigation. The closed portion of the meeting lasted more than an hour. On returning to open session, council moved quickly to address several personnel issues. Tommy Herron and Roger Cassel moved to terminate Employee 7, which passed with Carl Hurt abstaining and remaining council members voting in favor of the motion. Frances Perry and Rita Tipton then put forward the motion to accept the resignation of Employee 29, which mirrored the earlier vote. Roger Cassel and Carl Hurt then moved that the temporary part time position at the water plant be eliminated, with all members voting in favor. Finally, Cassel and Perry moved that the part time employee position held by Employee 31 be eliminated. Again, all members voted in favor of the motion.
Council then voted to pay the bills and adjourn.
The closed session overshadowed a full council agenda, which included a presentation from Aaron Arnett of Arnett and Muldrow, a city planning firm engaged by the town to aid in pursuing a Community Development Block Grant for downtown revitalization. Arnett stressed the importance of the proposed multi-use facility in Gate City's municipal parking lot on Water Street, and also the need for cooperation between town officials, residents, and other entities to make revitalization a success.
A public hearing will be held to solicit comments.
