Final BOS Budget Meeting is Friday

From staff reports

Two of the county’s constitutional officers will be getting new employees, courtesy of the State Compensation Board.

At last Thursday’s adjourned meeting of the Scott County Board of Supervisors, the board learned the comp board had approved a new position in the commissioner of revenue’s office and another new employee for the circuit court clerk.

According to Kathie Noe, interim county administrator, the salary for the revenue’s employee is $19,902 with the county picking up 50 percent of the cost. The other position in the clerk’s office will be paid a starting salary of $22,281 with the entire salary paid by the comp board.

For the past few years Scott County Commissioner of Revenue Gary Baker had asked for additional funding for a part-time position but the board wasn’t willing to pick up the entire price tag. One year supervisors even suggested that Baker and Circuit Court Clerk Mark ‘Bo’ Taylor could share an employee and the board would pay for the entire costs of employment but Baker wouldn’t agree to the idea.

Lane Engineering was awarded the bid for courthouse renovations, which could start as soon as June 21. Noe said the company will be subcontracting much of the repair work.

The board also discovered the county had been awarded a $26,500 grant to transition the county pound from its current gas-method of euthanasia to injection. The grant also includes enough money for a part-time position for one year at the pound.

Supervisors spent a great deal of time discussing their options in regards to some new equipment needed at Scott County Park and Golf Course. The golf course wants to replace its current tractor with a larger, better equipped tractor and a fairway mower.

The FY2007-08 budget also includes $15,000 for a space needs assessment of county government, an increase of $5,000. Noe said the additional money was suggested after county officials talked to Thompson & Litton engineering firm.

Supervisors also spent some time behind closed doors to review applications received for the county administrator’s position.

At this time, $2.9 million must be taken from county surplus funds to balance the 2007-08 budget without a tax increase.

The Scott County Board of Supervisors is expected to finalize their budget during an adjourned meeting set for Friday, May 25 at 4 p.m. in the county office building. All meetings are open to the public.
