A bomb threat has forced local officials to close the Scott County Courthouse.
This is the third time in recent memory the courthouse has been shutdown due to heightened security reasons.
According to authorities, a call was placed from the pay phone at the Double Kwik Shell near the state line around 9 a.m. stating that a bomb was in the courthouse.
Courthouse personnel responded by evacuating the premises. People who were in town to appear in court lined the downtown streets of Gate City.
Police moved most of the folks to the blocks east and west of the courthouse as they searched for a possible bomb in the historic building.
Even though the weather wasn’t the best, most stayed within the perimeter of the courthouse, hoping to be able to finish their court-related business.
By 10:30 a.m. law enforcement officials closed the building for the remainder of the day to continue their search. Eventually, officials closed down the 200 block of Jackson Street.
Wednesday is generally a busy court day especially in the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. With the tax deadline set for next weekend, several county residents were in Gate City to pay their taxes.
