Think of giving not as a duty but as a privilege.
- John D. Rockefeller Jr.
As the cold winter weather and season of good wishes approaches, it is time to think about those in need.
And the Rotary Club of Scott County is asking local residents to remember some special county youngsters who deserve the gift of warmth as part of their annual Shoe Fund fund-raising campaign.
For the past 18 years, members of the club have been providing new shoes and socks to deserving schoolchildren in Scott County. Beginning with an initial purchase of 29 pairs of shoes in 1989 to more than 500 pair last year, the fund drive is a way to help county students at Christmas time.
The Rotary Club of Scott County kicked off its 19th annual campaign during the 2007 holiday season. They ask local residents to send donations for the Shoe, Clothes and Educational Fund and have set a goal of $15,000 for 2007.
"Lots of students at area schools have already signed up to receive these special gifts which are provided by the generosity of local residents," said Greg Adams, chair of the 2007 campaign. "It is wonderful to live in a county where our community comes together to help out one another and we are certainly appreciative of any and all donations."
Scott County school employees help to identify children who receive the gifts of two new pair of socks and a new pair of shoes. All of these items are purchased at a discount retailer to stretch all contributions further.
"All donations sent to the Shoe Fund help us make Christmas a bit warmer for
these deserving children," Adams added.
Contributions can be sent to Children's Shoe Fund, c/o Scott County Rotary Club,
P.O. Box 728, Gate City, Va. 24251. The names of all contributors will be
published along with a total of all donations in the Scott County Virginia Star.
