From staff reports
Gate City officials plan to go after some grant money that would help in their downtown revitalization efforts and they are asking local residents for their input at a special public hearing set for Feb. 19.
The Town of Gate City is applying to the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development for a $700,000 Community Development Block Grant for revitalizing portions of their downtown business district.
The application is based on a master plan concept conceived by Arnett & Muldrow of Greenville, S.C. and includes downtown façade renovations, new entrance and directional signage and other improvements.
“If you are interested in Gate City’s downtown revitalization we want your input,” explained Gate City’s Acting Town Manager Cindy Coates. “We are re-submitting an application we filed last year and need more citizen involvement to be successful.”
The town is working with Kalena Porter, a regional planner with the Lenowisco Planning District Commission, to complete the official application, which must be sent by March 26.
The public hearing is set for Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the Town Hall Auditorium. All comments will be collected to be forwarded with the CDBG grant application.
Town officials and Porter will distribute information on the amount of funding available, requirements and eligible activities.
All interested business owners and town residents are urged to attend. For additional information, contact Coates, Rita Tipton or Mark Jenkins at 386-3831.
