Scott County voters danced to the beat of a different drum at last week’s Democratic and Republican Primaries.
While statewide voters chose Democrat Barack Obama and Republic John McCain, local voters selected their opponents.
Obama won 63.65 percent of the Democratic votes compared to Hillary Clinton’s 35.47 percent in the statewide race. In Scott County, Clinton garnered 80.36 percent of the votes while Obama only received 17.42 percent of the vote.
On the Republican side, McCain earned 50.04 percent with former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee receiving 40.77 percent. In Scott County, Huckabee garnered 57.5 percent of Republican voters while McCain received 39.07 percent in a much closer race than the Democratic Primary.
A total of 1,579 county residents voted in the Republican Primary and 1,406 voted in the Democratic Primary.
Statewide loads of registered voters cast votes in the Democratic Primary by a margin of 2 to 1. Nearly 1 million voted in the Virginia Democratic Primary - 985,280 cast votes in the race.
Obama received 627,135 votes followed by Clinton, 349,528; Edwards, 5,190; Dennis Kucinich, 1,693; Bill Richardson, 990 and Joe Biden, 804.
Nearly half a million voted in the Republican Primary in Virginia. The total number that voted was 487,478. McCain received 243,981 votes followed by Huckabee, 198,787; Ron Paul, 21,867; Mitt Romney, 17,500; Fred D. Thompson, 3,368 and Rudy Giuliani, 1,975.
Although some of the candidates had previously dropped out the race for president, their names remained on the Virginia ballot.
