From staff reports
Next Friday, you need to watch because you might be arrested in Gate City and headed to the old Scott County Jail. But it's all in good fun to raise money for the American Red Cross.
Jail-n-Bail, a popular spring fund-raising event for the American Red Cross, will be hitting the streets of Gate City on Friday, April 4.
The Scott County American Red Cross Hero's officially kicked-off its 2008 campaign Monday, March 3. They have planned two fund-raisers in April to raise money for the Scott County Disaster Action Team. "All of the money raised will be used for folks who have lost their home due to fire or have been affected by other natural disasters," explained Karen Davidson.
The group is planning a silent auction for Thursday, April 3 in the community room of the Scott County Community Services Building. Some of the items available at the sale include tickets to Dollywood, Kings Island and Barter Theater, golf at Cattails, loads of restaurant gift certificates and many more items.
"We're also planning a Jail-n-Bail like we did last year, except this year our newly-elected sheriff is going to be kind enough to let us use the actual jail in Gate City," she added. "So everyone we arrest will go straight to the old slammer! This event is planned for Friday, April 4. We are currently selling "arrest warrants" for $5." If you would like to send someone to jail for an hour or two and help out a good cause, contact Davidson at Rural Areas Development Association at 386-6441.
Scott County is served by the Mountain Empire Chapter of the American Red Cross, which also provides services to residents of eastern Sullivan County in Tennessee; the cities of Bristol and Norton, and the Virginia Counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington and Wise.
Whether it's a single-family house fire or a devastating tornado, the Red Cross is there. Last year, the Mountain Empire Chapter helped over 170 families in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee rebuild their lives after losing their homes to disasters.
The chapter has teams of volunteers in each county of the chapter's jurisdiction to better respond to the needs of our residents. These volunteers meet individually with those who have had disasters to address their needs. Generally, the Red Cross helps with immediate disaster-caused needs experienced within the first few days or weeks of a disaster. If you or someone you know needs immediate help after a fire or other disaster, call their toll free line at 1-866-645-6650 or (276) 645-6650.
