From staff reports
It's a day Dungannon residents were happy to see. On Good Friday, March 21, the town was allowed to remove its five-month-long boil notice after problems at the town's water storage tank had been resolved.
On Friday, Dungannon officials sent out a news release that advised its water customers of that its drinking water problem had been rectified.
"We are pleased to report that the problem has been corrected and that it is no longer necessary to boil your tap water," officials wrote in the release. "We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience." The Town of Dungannon's water system has been under a boil notice since Nov. 9, 2007 when it was discovered that the water storage tank was leaking. Some of their customers have not had running water on several occasions and the water problems date back to June 2007.
The Scott County Board of Supervisors enacted a emergency declaration for the Dungannon water situation in November and have been completing daily paperwork monitoring the situation as required by the Virginia Department of Health.
Supervisors are expected to lift the emergency declaration at their next meeting on April 2.
Last month, water levels in the town's tank were dropping so rapidly town officials feared the situation was growing worse. But recent rains have helped to fill up the tank which allowed town employees to discover a large leak in the system.
Town employees repaired nearly 20 leaks in the town's water lines and officials are hopeful they have corrected their leakage problems.
Town officials tell water customers to flush their taps several times until the water clears if customers find their tap water to be dingy or discolored.
