Kentucky Pair Arrested in Traffic Stop

More than $5,000 in cash, a large amount of marijuana and other controlled substances were discovered during a routine traffic stop in Gate City.
Gate City Police Chief Thomas H. Smitley reported that Brandy Mullins of Whitesburg, Ky. and her passenger, Christopher Duff, also of Whitesburg, Ky. were arrested after the Gate City Police Officer Matthew Taylor initiated a traffic stop on Highway 23 near Big Break in Weber City.
The two were arrested after both gave false information and were charged with felony possession of marijuana, conspiracy to distribute marijuana, possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute Schedule III and IV drugs, attempted violation of Drug Control Act and other misdemeanors.
Mullins was also charged with numerous driving violations including no operator's license, driving while intoxicated and identity theft.
According to Smitley, the Gate City police officer pulled over the 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Mullins when the driver failed to stop for the signal light at the intersection of Highway 23 and Gateway Plaza. The officer noticed she appeared to have bloodshot and glassy eyes and gave the officer a false name and made incriminating statements.
Duff also reportedly gave the officer a false name.
During a subsequent search of the vehicle, Gate City Police with assistance of Scott County Sheriff's Deputies and Weber City Police discovered a large amount of marijuana and more than $5,000 in cash. Law enforcement officials also seized the suspect's vehicle.
The two had their first court appearance yesterday in Scott County General District Court at 9 a.m.
