John Ferguson Jr. can now remove the word “Interim” from his official job title.
The Scott County School Board voted to hire Ferguson as superintendent of Scott County Public Schools at last night’s monthly meeting held at Fort Blackmore Primary School.
Details from Ferguson’s contract were not available at press time.
Board members interviewed the first of four candidates last Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the school board central office with all members of the board serving on the interview committee. The last candidate’s interview began at 2:30 p.m.
School Board Chairman James Kay Jessee declined to disclose the names of the four candidates other than the interim superintendent.
Ferguson was tapped to fill the position for a six-month probationary period on May 3 after the board accepted the formal resignation of Greg Baker. Baker officially resigned his position in May, citing health and personal concerns, after only a few months on the job.
Baker was hired late last year to fill the position left vacant with the retirement of long-time superintendent Jim Scott. He officially took office Jan. 1, 2011.
Baker submitted his formal resignation in April and agreed to leave the board’s employ as the superintendent June 30, 2011while retaining his position as board attorney. Circumstances changed and a month later, the Scott County School Board voted to accept Baker’s resignation from both positions effective May 3, 2011.
School officials only advertised the job for superintendent within the Scott County School System and on the system's website.
Applications for the position were to be sent to the chairman’s home address by the deadline of Aug. 18.
